Program Philosophy
As parents we watched and marveled at the way our little ones learned to talk.   By listening and responding to English spoken well, they were able to communicate quite clearly.  The process
was so gradual that they were not even aware it was taking place.

It is the belief of those associated with the Learning Language Arts Through Literature series that written language can best be learned in the same manner.  By reading fine literature and working with good models of writing, children will receive a quality education in language arts.  If you desire to teach using this integrated approach to language, this curriculum is for you.

Dr. Ruth Beechick has confirmed that this method of teaching is an appropriate and successful way to introduce our young students to the joys of reading, writing, and thinking. Our own experiences using these lessons with young children have encouraged us to share them with you. Their enjoyment and enthusiasm for reading and writing is an unmatched recommendation for this method of teaching.

The integrated language approach has the benefits of all teaching methods.  By working with pieces of real literature, you focus on grammar, reading, vocabulary, spelling, writing, thinking skills, and penmanship.  Your student has the best advantage for learning skills in this effective and lasting manner.

This program provides you with materials, activities, and suggestions that will encourage and benefit you as you create a learning environment for your student.  Since everyone is different, we suggest that you try our ideas, and then freely experiment until you find patterns that work for you.

This program is written to be taught in numbered lessons for easy reference.  The easy-to-use format will make your teaching easier and more effective.  A lesson usually takes about one week to complete, depending on you and your student.

Lessons contain a passage of literature and learning activities.  These activities are designed to help your student learn language skills in their context while developing writing and thinking skills.

Everyday words taken from literature teach  English grammar, spelling, and writing through dictation and activities that hold your student's interest.

The YELLOW Book Program Overview

Grammar
Grammar is taught in conjunction with reading and writing, not as an isolated subject.  An emphasis is placed on grammar skills appropriate for the third grade level.

Reading Skills
Literature Links
and Comprehension Checks throughout the program enhance your student's reading abilities and give you and your students the confidence of progressing through all the content and skills for this grade level.   You may select the short stories included in The Yellow Teacher's Book, or your may choose the following optional books:
The White Stallion by Elizabeth Shub
Madaline by Ludwig Bemelmans
Meet George Washington by Joan Heilbroner
The Courage of Sarah Noble by Alice Dalgliesh

These books are written on a third grade readability level and will be enjoyed by all students. Vocabulary and discussion questions provide additional reinforcement of reading skills.

Literature Links give your students the skills and vocabulary needed for effective reading, plus additional activities bring the stories to life.

Spelling
Focus on Spelling
is included in each lesson. Words have been carefully selected to help your student learn essential spelling tips that will provide him with the tools needed as he progresses in the series.  Students are taught using the See-Say-Spell method.  Which encourages your student to look and see how the word is spelled, say the word aloud, and then spell the word.  By using a multi-sensory method, your student has the advantage of seeing, saying, and spelling.

Higher-Order Thinking Skills
Higher-Order Thinking Skills are developed throughout the activities in this manual.  When your student is asked to respond to the literature with discussion, writing, drawing, or completing an activity, he is developing his thinking skills.

Creative Writing
Writing skills are developed within the context of learning reading and grammar skills.  Your student is given ample opportunity to express ideas through drawing and writing.  The beginning of creative writing is creative thinking.

Cursive Handwriting
As your student learns cursive writing, encourage him in his own ability.   The handwriting illustrations in this manual show a realistic style.  We recommend that you not compare his handwriting to a perfect model.  He will improve as the year progresses and develop his own style as he matures.

Cursive handwriting activities are presented in a systematic manner to ensure that your students retain these important skills.

Review Activities
New skills taught in each lesson are included in the Review Activities found directly after most of the lessons.  You simply choose the skills your student needs.

Assessments
Assessments are included in the program for your use.  An I C.A.N. Assessment has been created for each Literature Link.  Teacher Friendly Assessments provide everything you need to evaluate students for a letter grade. Also great for determining the areas of growth needed for each individual student.

Skills Index
The Skills Index is located in the back of the manual.  To ensure that the language arts skills commonly held appropriate for third grade instruction were adequately covered, much research was involved in the writing of this curriculum.

Bibliography
Next you will find the bibliography.  This will give you all the information you need to locate the books quoted in the lessons.  The selection includes wonderful books that we hope your family will read and enjoy.

Enrichment Activities
In each lesson you will find the treasure chest icon for the Enrichment Activities.  This is your cue to look for the activity located in the Student Activity Book.  Answers to these activities are found in this manual.   While optional, these activities develop thinking and reasoning skills necessary for higher level learning.
