LEARNING LANGUAGE ARTS THROUGH LITERATURE
THE GREEN BOOK - 7TH GRADE
PROGRAM OVERVIEW - SCOPE & SEQUENCE

The Green Book 7th Grade Program Overview

With Learning Language Arts Through Literature your student will learn all the language arts skills with better retention using this natural, integrated method for learning.
A blend of dictation and units, lessons integrate all the fifth grade language arts skills: English grammar, creative writing, composition, spelling, higher-order reasoning, and study skills.

The Green Book
seventh grade skills is divided into eleven sections:

Everyday Words (thirteen weeks) - The twelve dictation lessons in this unit will provide a thorough review of the parts of sentences.  As a further re-enforcement the student will learn how to diagram the parts in order to strengthen his understanding of how these parts fit together.  This unit has been divided into five smaller units and distributed throughout the book, enabling the student to enjoy a variety of activities in between.

Poetry Unit (six weeks) - The student will develop an appreciation for poetry while memorizing, reciting, and analyzing the works of different poets.  In addition, he will be writing poems and a psalm of his own.  A dictation lesson is provided later in the book as a review.

Book Study on Star of Light (three weeks) - While reading this book the student will complete such assignments as writing character sketches, comparing and contrasting cultures and religions, drawing maps, narrating, and more.

The Short Story Unit (three weeks) - The Student will enjoy exploring the elements of the short story.  He will be able to develop a story line, write dialogue, identify the conflict of a story as well as its climax and resolution.

Book Study on Adam and His Kin (four weeks) - A narrative history of the first eleven chapters of Genesis by Dr. Ruth Beechick is the basis for this four-week unit.  The student will develop skills in researching, drawing graphs, and writing narration.

Book Study on the Play Much Ado About Nothing (three weeks) - The student will read and study a Shakespearean play, developing the ability to understand and enjoy the work of this great playwright.

Research Unit (four weeks) - The student will learn the research process in manageable steps.  These include choosing a topic, taking notes, formulating an outline, writing a first draft, making revisions, completing the final draft, and writing a bibliography.

Review Activities
Review Activities are found directly after each Everyday Words section. New skills taught in each lesson are included in the Review Activities. It is not necessary to do each activity.  Simply choose the skills your student needs to review.

Assessments
Following each Everyday Words section, you will find an assessment.  You may use these assessments to grade your student accordingly.

Skills Index
The Language Arts Skills Index is located in the back of the Teacher's Book.   To ensure that skills commonly held appropriate for this grade level instruction were adequately covered, much research was involved in the writing of this curriculum.
