The
Philosophy Behind LLATL
As parents we watched and marveled at the way our little ones learned to talk.
By listening and responding to English spoken well, they were able to communicate
quite clearly. The process was so gradual that they were not even
aware it was taking place.
It is the belief of those associated with the Learning Language Arts Through
Literature series that written language can best be learned in the same manner. By
reading fine literature and working with good models of writing, children will receive a
quality education in language arts. If you desire to teach using this integrated
approach to language, this curriculum is for you.
Dr. Ruth Beechick has confirmed that this method of teaching is an appropriate and
successful way to introduce our young students to the joys of reading, writing, and
thinking. Our own experiences using these lessons with young children have encouraged us
to share them with you. Their enjoyment and enthusiasm for reading and writing is an
unmatched recommendation for this method of teaching. Excellent for the home schooling or
the traditional classroom environment.
"What an improvement over the
standard methods of language learning! In this series, students learn from excellent
literature how to be better writers and thinkers. I highly recommend it."

A
Fully Integrated Language Art
Learning Language Arts Through Literature is a fully integrated
language arts program that teaches English grammar, reading, spelling, vocabulary, writing
mechanics, creative writing, thinking skills, and more.
For example, a basal, one size fits all, program may teach adjectives separately
from other skills. The student may be asked to fill in blanks with adjectives and
circle them in a paragraph. This may give your student a clue about adjectives, but
does not translate into a practical use of adjectives in their writing.
In LLATL, your student may read literature passages that use adjectives. He
may be asked to read the passage without the adjectives and decide how important they are
to the understanding of a story. Another activity may include writing a descriptive
sentence/paragraph about a picture using adjectives or rewriting the passage using
different adjectives. These activities not only teach language arts skills in
addition to adjectives, but your student will incorporate the skills into his everyday
writing.
Real books are used in the reading lessons, complete with vocabulary words,
discussion questions, and a variety of activities. Reading real books instead of
basal stories makes reading a joy and the beginning of a lifelong adventure for your
student.
All levels are written for a 36 week school year. Grade levels 1st-8th
program sets include The Teacher's Book, written in a conversational
format making it easy to use with little or no preparation time for the teacher, and The
Student Activity Book. The Student Activity Book contains daily exercises
corresponding to each lesson in The Teacher's Book allowing for easy use and more
independent work, a BONUS for teachers. Each Student Activity Book also provides
Enrichment Activities such as word puzzles, analogies, logic/reasoning activities
and more found ONLY in the Student Activity Book. All levels include review activities and assessments. The goal of any language arts program should be to
equip the student for a lifetime of communication through the written and spoken
word. With LLATL, your student will acquire a deeper understanding and a greater
interest in the language arts subjects. |
