| LEARNING THROUGH SOUNDS TEACHER'S MANUAL |
 |
This
117 page Teachers' Manual covers the two grade one phonics workbooks - LEARNING
THROUGH SOUNDS I and LEARNING THROUGH SOUNDS II. Other workbooks available to aid the
teaching of phonics which we highly recommend are: HELPING YOURSELF- a pupils
workbook designed to give extra practice through seatwork and busywork without taking much
of the teachers time. Instructions are included in the pupils workbooks. |
|
|
| LEARNING THROUGH SOUNDS - WORKBOOK
1 |
 |
This
80 page workbook has been prepared especially for first graders in home school or
classroom environment. Pictures have been carefully chosen to be of objects the average
child is familiar with. Not only was the book prepared with the children in mind, their
teacher was also considered. Though children need a certain amount of teacher help to
master the skill of sounding out words, this workbook has been designed so that the
children will soon be able to work without much teacher assistance. |
| You will notice
there are no instructions included with the exercises in this book. You will find detailed
instructions, plus a wealth of supplementary exercises in the "Teachers Manual
for Grade One Readers. " We would like to encourage teachers to follow the
instructions given in the manual, then let their own imagination and that of the children
lead them into deeper and more detailed lessons in phonics. |
|
|
| LEARNING THROUGH SOUNDS - WORKBOOK 2 |
 |
This 88 page
workbook has been prepared especially for first graders, to follow LEARNING THROUGH
SOUNDS, Book 1. All the sounds taught in Book 1 are reviewed on the first pages of this
workbook, and then the consonant blends, long vowels, consonant and vowel digraphs, and
some of the diphthongs are introduced and taught. Great care was taken to reinforce and
review each sound repeatedly, but no workbook can take the place of daily drilling. |
The
teacher is encouraged to work with her pupils until they recognize each sound
automatically the instant they see it.
No teacher should attempt to teach the lessons in this workbook without the aid of its
accompanying teachers manual. The manual contains complete instructions, plus ideas
for games and activities that help the children learn and remember the sounds. The manual,
however, should not be considered the "one and only" teaching method. It is
merely made up of suggestions that should motivate each teacher to use her own imagination
and adapt the ideas to fit her way of teaching and her first grade students. The first part of this workbook has no children
instructions. They are thoroughly explained in the teachers manual. Later on, when
the children should be able to read the instructions, they are included on the pages. |
|
|
| HELPING YOURSELF
- SEATWORK BOOK |
 |
HELPING
YOURSELF is an 88 page seatwork book that has especially been prepared for the benefit of
busy teachers in home school,
parochial, or other small classroom environments and their not-so-busy first graders. Compiled by a
veteran Pennsylvania teacher, it is designed to be used during the first weeks of the
term, along with the phonics book, LEARNING THROUGH SOUNDS. |
You will notice
that the first twelve pages are primarily pencil and cut-paste lessons, and from then on
there are two pages for each letter of the alphabet, taken in the same order they are
introduced in LEARNING THROUGH SOUNDS.
This does not mean, however, that this busywork book can not be used with other
phonics programs. It will go well with any workbook, providing the pages are given in an
order to comply with the other material being used. With perhaps a few exceptions, every other page is a
cut-and-paste exercise. This is for several reasons. First, children can not print neatly
until they have developed good hand coordination. Learning to use a scissors helps to
develop this coordination. Second, though a bit messy, cutting and pasting is a time
consuming and enjoyable pastime for first graders. Like in anything else, they can be
trained to be neat with this. Stress using only a little bit of glue or paste, and
cleaning up their mess when they are finished.
There is no teachers manual for this
seatwork book. Simple instructions are included on each page, and each lesson is designed
so that the pupils can work independently without much help from the teacher. In short, it
is to keep the children busy without making the teacher busier. |

|
| TO THE TEACHER |
| The
following are some general suggestions given on teaching this curriculum. 1. Enthusiasm is your keyword.
The attitude with which children tackle their lessons is often a reflection of their
teachers attitude. Therefore the importance of showing enthusiasm can not be
overstressed. From the very first day of school, children should be guided to look forward
to the time when they can read. You might say, "Wont that be nice when you can
read stories all by yourself?"
Learning should be an interesting, challenging experience that lasts even beyond the time
the pupil attends school. If the interest and ambition to learn is not instilled into the
child when he is young, there is a danger that he will never really enjoy learning. Though
a childs education begins long before he starts to school, you must remember that
his first actual experience in book learning lies in his first-grade teachers hands.
How she guides him through those first weeks of school could very easily determine the
type of pupil he will be throughout his years in school. And it does not stop there. One
writer said, "As the morning is to the day, so is the child to the man." As we
can expect a bright, sunny morning to turn out to be a nice day, an industrious, willing
pupil can be expected to become just that type of grown-up.
Since a teachers enthusiasm rubs off on her pupils, you should never be afraid to
say, "This page looks interesting. Youll like doing it." Never,
never tell first graders their work isnt hard or it isnt important. Let them
feel as if they have accomplished something, even if it is only a simple lesson. In order
to teach first graders, the teacher must see their lessons through the eyes of
six-year-olds. She must imagine herself in their place and take an interest in the things
that interest them. It is only when children have gained confidence in their teacher and
confidence in themselves that they are ready to enjoy school. And only when they enjoy
school will they tackle their lessons with enthusiasm. |
