About
The Prepositional Approach |
Let me assure you that Easy Grammar is as the name implies---EASY! Both
teachers and parents have shared that, in teaching the easily presented concepts found in
Easy Grammar materials, they, too, have learned!
The Easy Grammar method uses a unique approach. Students memorize and learn
prepositions first. Why? Most of the time, a prepositional phrase will not be the
subject of a sentence. It will never be a verb. Therefore, students are taught
to delete prepositional phrases to help determine subject and verb. It's so easy!
Usually, a prepositional phrase will not be a direct object, a predicate
nominative, or anything important. The Easy Grammar method simplifies the teaching and
learning of the English language.
In using this process, students are actively engaged in learning. They love the
"hands on" manner, and the process makes them successful.
This approach is used periodically throughout the text in order for students to understand
other concepts such as direct objects, subject/verb agreement, etc.
Another important difference in Easy Grammar is that concepts are introduced and reviewed
throughout the school year. In addition, reviews and cumulative reviews are provided
along the way to help insure mastery learning.
The Easy Grammar Series also includes units of study in capitalization, punctuation,
sentence types, friendly letters, and more.
Daily Grams: Guided Review Aiding Mastery Skills are also available and recommended.
Providing ample daily review of concepts, these are extremely effective in helping
to insure mastery. There are 180 reviews per book, and each page contains
capitalization review, punctuation review, grammar/dictionary skills, and sentence
combining for improved writing skills.

Easy
Grammar: Grades 4 and 5
A Letter From The Author |
Dear Educator,Thank you for considering this
text. Dont let the length cause doubts. Easy Grammar: Grades 4 and 5 will
provide wonderful learning for your students. As the name implies, the process is easy. I
have kept the vocabulary simple and, in most cases, the sentences rather short. My goal is
for all students to understand and enjoy English.
I have put more of "my teaching" into
this text than any other book. I hope that you can sense how excited I am about that. I
have spent extra time providing you with additional strategies and tips that have helped
my students learn. Although some may criticize my use of the first person perspective in
the notes provided throughout this text, I feel that, in sharing my experience, you and
your students will benefit.
In fact, one purpose of this letter is to share how
I personally would use this text, Although capitalization, punctuation, and friendly
letter units are located near the end, you may teach them when you choose. However, allow
me to share how I incorporate them. Again, this isnt the "perfect" way; it
simply has worked for me in my teaching over a period of many years.
I begin with my students memorizing the list
of prepositions and continue through the preposition unit and the pages on direct objects.
I, then, teach the capitalization unit. The unit is set up so that only a few rules are
introduced at a time; capitalization, however, can be challenging. I teach it slowly and
thoroughly. After completing the capitalization unit, I return to the verb unit.
Before the noun unit, I teach punctuation. In
teaching capitalization and punctuation at the beginning of the year, I can spend the rest
of the year reviewing concepts. This is where the daily review found in one of the Daily
Grams texts becomes so valuable. In Daily Grams, students review these concepts
daily, one lesson every day of the
school year.
Also, I model friendly letters during the first
week of school. Students write a friendly letter at least every other week during the
first semester and at least once a month throughout the second semester. Mastery comes
with practice!
My major request is that you teach grammar concepts
in order. This text is set up with unit reviews, unit tests, cumulative reviews, and
cumulative tests. If grammar is taught sequentially, continuity occurs and mastery
is enhanced.
Please relax. This text is very, very easy to
teach. If I have done my job, students will be /earning to use grammar as a too/ for
speaking and writing properly.
Sincerely,
Wanda C. Phillips |
