| This curriculum requires lab
assignments because chemistry is a laboratory course. Labs are described in the laboratory
manual, which is separate from the student text. The suggested teaching schedule
designates one class period per chapter as a lab day, although some chapters have more
than one lab day. Chemistry
is an experimental science based on observation. While performing experiments from this
lab manual, students will make qualitative observations and quantitative observations.
Qualitative observations use words to describe things while quantitative observations use
numbers to describe specific amounts. These observations lead to inquiry and problem
solving. Each experiment in this manual includes one or more of the following tasks
involved in problem solving:
- planning and designing - formulating questions
- performance - manipulating materials
- analysis and interpretation - processing data
and explaining relationships
- application - formulating a hypothesis based
on results
