The Common Sense method for teaching reading provides step-by-step assistance for teachers as they guide their student through beginning reading instruction. In order to determine which skills to present in this program, the authors drew from their own classroom experience, teaching their own students to read, and from the excellent information obtained from two primary sources: A Home Start in Reading by Dr. Ruth Beechick; and Teaching Students: A Curriculum Guide To What Students Need to Know at Each Level Through Sixth Grade by Diane Lopez.
The authors relied heavily on Dr. Ruth Beechick's principles, as outlined in A Home Start in Reading. This sound and proven process ensures that the necessary phonics skills are taught, while also adding higher order thinking skills usually overlooked by other programs.
We are honored to be a part of the process that will introduce your student to the wonderful world of reading, using the common sense approach.
The Integrated Language Approach has the benefits of all teaching methods. By working with pieces of real literature, you focus on english grammar, reading, vocabulary, spelling, writing, thinking skills, and penmanship. Your student has the best advantage for learning language arts skills in this effective and lasting manner.

LLATL Philosophy
As parents we watched and marveled at the way our little ones learned to talk. By listening and responding to English spoken well, they were able to communicate quite clearly. The process was so gradual that they were not even aware it was taking place.
It is the belief of those associated with the Learning Language Arts Through Literature series that written language can best be learned in the same manner. By reading fine literature and working with good models of writing, children will receive a quality education in language arts. If you believe that teaching reading using this integrated approach to language would be the desired teaching method then this curriculum is for you.
